The competition’s theme centers on capturing movement through photography. A panel of photography professionals will select the best original photos to exhibit from five categories relating to the central theme of movement. Additional competition entries will be exhibited to interpret a photographic process or social/cultural/political movement or historical event affecting the development of photography. Cash prizes will also be awarded.
A catalog recognizing the winners and finalists, with essays by the coordinator and possible guest writer, will record this exhibit. Following the exhibit at the 2008 L.A. County Fair, the Millard Sheets Center for the Arts at Fairplex will host an online exhibit of winners and finalists.

Theme
Early photography struggled with the capability to capture events in action, or movement. This year’s competition chronicles the capturing of movement, both physically and figuratively, through various photographic processes. While digital submission for judging is required of all photographs, the processes of creating a print for exhibition are encouraged to be as varied as possible. Photos in black and white or color are both acceptable and will be judged against each other.
Categories
A. Physical Movement – Humans, machines, nature (dance, sports, clouds, rain, airplanes, etc.) This category can include portraits of a person or people in motion.
B. Photojournalism – Whether a local news item, family event, or universally experienced force of man or nature, these photographs depict a pivotal moment that could or has been developed into a news story. Please provide a description and date of the event in caption. This category may also include a staged happening or famous historical event that has been dramatized for the camera.
C. Active Illusion – The idea of movement in this category is to move the viewer’s eye around the entire picture through creating a puzzling, humorous, or curious visual illusion. The photograph may give the illusion of movement, but this is not necessary. While image manipulation software is allowed in this category, the excessive use of Photoshop filters and the like are discouraged. Consider the use of props and compositional elements.
D. Abstracted Movement – Nonobjective photographs or experimental processes (such as photocollage/montage/3-D work) are encouraged in this category.
E. Movement Through Time – Photographs that hearken back to an earlier time or allude to specific movements in art history. Costuming, lighting, or early photographic techniques are all welcome and recommended for this category. Please provide time frame and/or movement in caption.
